UX IN A GOURMET GROCERY STORE
I work at a grocery store (things I need to do for survival). My geeky eyes see design everywhere and here's some interesting places in a grocery store where User Experience Design plays a role - solely my observations.
What is this project?
A set of observations and insights I derived that might have an effect on the business and customers of a grocery store.
Applied a method used for converting observations into insights during a UX research and design process.
MY OBSERVATIONS AND INSIGHTS
OBSERVATION
"Where do I check out?" is the most frequently asked question by new customers.
HYPOTHESIS
The store is 'purposefully' designed in such a way that the checkout is at the extreme end from where a customer enters.
INSIGHT
This layout encourages customers to explore more products, increasing the likelihood of additional purchases before checkout.
OBSERVATION
I am asked to display Olive oil separately at the front of the store, unlike other oils.
HYPOTHESIS
Since olive oil is more popular in this gourmet store, placing it in a highly visible and accessible area increases customer engagement.
INSIGHT
High-selling and premium products are positioned at eye level or in prominent locations, similar to how digital platforms highlight best-selling or premium options to maximize profits.
OBSERVATION
My supervisor is dissatisfied whenever he notices even a 2 cm empty space on the store shelves!
HYPOTHESIS
A fully stocked store creates the perception of abundance and variety, making the shopping experience more engaging for customers.
INSIGHT
Just like physical retail space, digital platforms optimize every inch of screen real estate whether for product displays or advertisements to maximize business potential.
